Japanese prior art search

Search Japanese Patent and Non-patent Literatures

Japanese patent documents are prime source of prior art. However, Japanese patent information is notoriously difficult to access and interpret, due to the language barrier and the differences in the patent systems.

We has been providing Japanese prior art search service to patent attorneys, IP managers and technical leaders of Fortune 500 companies since 1997. We focus on our strengths in searching and translating Japanese patent documents and non-patent literatures.

For Japanese patent search, we usually use following databases:

  • Patolis: mainly for classification search;
  • NRI: mainly used for full text search;
  • JP-NET, mainly for file history/legal status search.

For Japanese non-patent literature searches, we usually use:

  • JSTPlus;
  • JMEDPlus;
  • G-Search; and
  • A few other supplemental databases including READ, NINii, GENii, Kaken, etc.

Usually we would generate and review 800 – 1500 hits from both the classification search (PATOLIS) and full text search (NRI).

After the search and review, a search report will be submitted for your review. In addition to the search report, we will also provide following deliverables:

  • List of all relevant documents found in the search;
  • English titles, abstracts of the relevant documents found in the search;
  • PDF files of all the relevant documents;
  • Machine translation output for the relevant patent documents uncovered in the search.
