Translation of FrameMaker Documents to Japanese, Chinese or Korean

FrameMaker is the most popular desktop publishing tool for producing technical documents such as user's manuals, owner's instructions, etc. In other words, most of the localization (translation) of technical documents is involved in FrameMaker document format.

Procedure of FrameMaker file localization (translation from English to Japanese):

• FrameMaker files are first be saved as MIF files, a file format that can be opened by Trados and other translation tools;
• Then a translation project is created if use Trados Workspace, and then MIF files are added to the project;
• Convert .MIF files to .STF files by selecting "convert to stf files";
• After that Trados tag files (.ttx files) are created by selecting "convert to Tradostag" for Trados TagEditor translation;
• Using Trados TagEditor to translate the .rtf.ttx files into Japanese or Chinese;
• After completing the translation and checking, convert the translated .ttx files in Japanese or Chinese back to .STF files;
• Convert the .STF files back to .MIF files;
• Open the .MIF files with FrameMaker and edit and adjust the files appropriately;
• Save the .MIF files as .FM format, double check the files again and complete the localization project.
